Mathematics: Data Central Idea: Information can be expressed by collecting, organising data and discuss chance in daily life Lines of Inquiry
Ms Smita: What is data? Charlie: It is knowledge when you research. Keshav: It is finding how many? Mikhail: It is finding how much? With this understanding we decided to to find out how many loops each of us could make in 3 minutes. We then laid them in a straight line. We realized that we had to label them and we needed a title for what we were finding out. Finally we analysed our loops, how long or short, how many or how few could we make. We found that Most or the longest loop was 13 loops long. Least or shortest was 2 loops long. Five students built loops that were 6 loops long. We sorted our shoes into three groups (laces, straps, and both-lace and staprs ) and made a concrete graph using our shoes. Literacy Week! Visiting Author and Illustrator - Fleur Vella Chang Mystery Reader: Clues: 1. She is the mother of one of the students in K2. 2. The students (whose mother is reading) name begins with a vowel. Book Swap and Mother Tongue reading with Grade 8. Character Dress Up UOI: How We Organize Ourselves We held each others hand and got tangled. Our challenge was to untangle ourselves without leaving each others hands.
We worked together in teams to present a shadow puppet or shadow performance.

Visit to Grade 1 class: The Grade 1 has a fish tank in their class. We wanted to see how their interactions affect the fishes. We had lots of questions for them. Mikhail and Reyansh wondered: Who would take care of the fishes when everyone goes home at night? Esther, Isabel and Gabriella wondered: What do they eat, how do they eat and what time do they eat? KueiYen wondered: Who cleaned the water tank and how did they do it? We learnt about the special kind of foods the fishes ate everyday. We also learnt that during the weekends the fishes have special food called feeder blocks which are placed in the tank. this helps feed the fishes on the weekend when we don't come to school. This is our last week of this unit. We made posters, books and a play to show our understanding. 100 Day Fun!
Field trip to the Zoo We saw a lot of animals at the zoo and had discussions about Is it fair for the animals to stay in the Zoo? What was the role of the Keepers at the Zoo? Were they being helpful or hurtful? Some of us thought that it was good for the animals to stay in the zoo as they were taken care of by the keepers at the zoo. But we did not like to see the animals living in small enclosures and cages and felt sad to for them. They should be living in the jungles and forest where they have more space to move. Visit to Botanic Garden Moving further with our inquiry into how human interactions affect other living things we visited the Learning Forest. Before our visit we wondered what animals we would see. Some of us thought we would see lions and some thought we would see snake. When we visited the Garden we found out that there were lots of tall trees in the garden but a lot of trees were cut down because they were very old and were not safe. We also saw some tress which were held upright by poles. We wondered why people had done that? Was it to support the trees from falling? We saw many insects and birds and trees. Here is a list of some of the living things that we saw: Lizard, bumble bees, spiders and its web, water hen, fish, tadpoles, bamboo trees, rooster, lily pads, turtle, flowers, ants, snails and dragon fly. We wondered why we did not see lions? Was it because there were so many people walking? Unit Of Inquiry: Sharing The Planet Central Idea: Human actions affect other living things Lines of Inquiry: Human interactions with other living things The result of human behaviour on other living things Key concepts: Responsibility Change This week, we looked at how human action affect other living things by visiting Mr Aik, our security guard who looks after the plants in our school. He showed us what he does to make sure the plants are well cared for at the front of the school. He talked to us about the importance of watering the plants, feeding the plants by giving them fertiliser, and getting rid of the weeds. All this helps the plants to grow into strong and healthy plants and trees. We had great fun potting our own plant and watering it. We think Mr AIk is being helpful to the plants by looking after them. We are being responsible of taking care of the plant and watering them everyday. We also take water the bamboo trees in the little playground. As we do that we are also looking at the changes that takes place due to our actions. We then had a look around the school campus and found plants that we know Mr Aik looks after and the ones he does not. We noticed that the big trees like the Banyan tree and the field plants are looked after by nature and not Mr Aik. Our focus in math this week was combining, separating and exploring combinations of whole numbers through various fun games and hand on activities! MYSTERY READER!
We had a mystery reader This week! It was Gabriella grandmother who came to read to us. We were all so excited! She read the 'Hungry Caterpillar' in Spanish to us! Even though we did not understand the meaning we could read the pictures:) UOI Sharing The Planet Central Idea: Human actions affect other living things Lines of Inquiry:
To learn about how we would react to other living things in the environment we went for a little picnic in our school! On two days we went to the lovely green areas in our school where we laid the mats and had our snack! It was so much fun (and we got lucky as it was not raining at that time and the sun was peeking out from between the clouds!). We saw some spiders, ants, bugs and a snail. And how did we interact? Some of us were scared, some of shooed the bug away and some of us just let let them be and watched them move! On another day when we just got back from the library we found a big mess in our class! The pencils were lying on the floor, the toys were found thrown all around the class! We wondered who had made the mess? We were sad, mad, upset and disturbed to see our class in a mess. We took up the responsibility and cleaned up the mess. Ms Smita was so proud of us! We then made connections to our new unit ' Sharing The Planet'. Just like being responsible for class, we also need to be responsible for our planet. Everything we do affects our planet. Mathematics:
Unit of Inquiry: As a culmination into our learning for our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit with the central idea of 'Dance, Mime and Acrobatics', it was time for us to perform. We first planned what we wanted to show, then practised and finally presented it in front of K1's. End of term party: Happy Holidays!
Unit Of Inquiry: This week we looked at the different acrobatic skills. The highlight of this week was, learning about the Flamenco Dance from Gabriella's mother. She said, the Flamenco Dance had originated more than 500 years ago from India and travelled across the Arab countries before it reached Spain. She showed us the special shoes and dress, girls wear when dancing. She then performed for us and helped us learn some steps. This is what we discovered we were doing when dancing. Stomping (tapping) the feet, Using the hands to shake our skirts/shorts Shaking our bodies Clapping Twirling Turning around Moving our hands up and down. She also shared that people in Spain, do the Flamenco at social gatherings and during special events. It was a dance to show happiness and excitement! Mathematics:
We created our own grids and programmed the Bee-bots to move from one destination to another! On another day we went through an obstacle course where we had to go on, under, around through and beside many obstacles. |
