Healthy Meal, Measurement and our G5 Buddies! How do we combine all the three? We decided to make a healthy plate of food with our G5 buddies! Since we could not use ovens or gas, we decided to make: Salad Sandwiches Strawberry milkshakes Did we get all the food groups in? Yes we did! Then we decided to use our measuring skills to measure all the ingredients to make them tasty and perfect. We collaborated with our G5 buddies, worked together, took turns and helped each other. Measuring heavy and light: We explored the different equipments. We found that the needle moves when we put things on the weighing scale. We also found that the balance scale can go up and down like a see-saw. The side which goes down is the heavier side. The side which goes up is the lighter side. We also noticed that sometimes both sides can be the same. They are balanced. Our Show: Connection with Global Goal #3 - Good Health and Wellbeing

Measuring capacity Filling different size circles with water drops, playing Bingo with capacity word cards, sequencing glasses filled with various capacity from empty to full, filling bottles with pompoms and playing a game on the computer to fill a huge barrel with water, was all the fun things we did to further our knowledge on capacity. Eating Healthy Eating foods from all the food groups is important to stay healthy. We found out that there are 5 food groups, vegetable, fruits, protein, grain and milk. We should have foods from all these groups to stay healthy. So we made our own healthy plate. KidsStop: Healthy Kitchen Here we revisit the different food groups and the importance of eating a variety of foods by cooking our very own delicious and healthy meal.
Should we sit at home and watch TV or go out and play? Viggo: Should go to the waterpark. Zoe: Should play with friends. Ashritha, Tyler and Ceyone: Go outside so that we can exercise. Advaith: If we don't go out we will not have friends. Should we sleep on time? Vivaan: We should get enough rest. Zoe: We need energy. Advaith: If we don't sleep we will be tired. Leya: Big bad wolf will eat if we don't sleep. Viggo: We can play with our friends in the morning if we sleep. Leya: Eyes will be spoilt. Should we eat chips ar carrot? Leya: Chips will make us fat. Reika: We can eat it sometimes. Anjali: We should eat carrot. It is good for our eyes. Healthy or Unhealthy? We then sorted foods in healthy and unhealthy category. Measuring length We measured the length of out friends and compared it with each other. We noted that Ashritha is longer than Anjali when she is lying down. Ceyone is longer than viggo when they are lying down. Measuring capacity: When Ms Smita showed us a container and asked us what we could measure with it, we said: milk, sugar, flour, water, juice, bunch of petals or flowers, honey, ink. We knew some words connected to capacity like full and empty. We learnt some new ones like half, quarter, almost full/nearly full. We noted that half is two quarters put together and almost full is three quarters put together. It was so much fun in the sandpit and the water tub, to fill our containers to full, half, nearly full, and empty it. Mystery reader!
We all became detectives! We were given several clues to solve who was going to be the mystery reader! We solved the mystery and found out it was Sammy's mum who was going to read us a story. She read us the book 'Topsy Turvy'. We could not stop laughing at all the things that turned upside down. We then used our creativity to make or draw something Topsy Turvy! Measuring objects (using non standard units of measurement): Moving our inquiry forward with measurement we realised that to measure accurately we need to measure using the same unit of measurement. We measured the length of objects using ice-cream stick in the class. To measure the length of different parts of the playground we used our body- we hopped, jumped, ran or took baby steps.
Physical, emotional and mental wellbeing: (body, mind and learning) Going further into our inquiry about how routines support our wellbeing, we had an instructor help us do Yoga. It made us feel calm and happy, we could get some exercise and helped build our muscles, thus taking care of our body and mind. Our grade 5 buddies read a book along with us, we could read the words or read the pictures and retell the story (3 ways to read a book). We are working together to make a book which is one way of retelling the story! Reflecting back we connected it to our last line of inquiry: things that help me learn. |
