When we went to the zoo, we had a look at behind the scenes of how the zookeepers and the vets look after the animals in the zoo. We learnt that there are 11,000 animals in the zoo and 5 vets.
We visited the wildlife health care centre and learnt how the animals are given vitamins and minerals and why they are important. We also learnt how the zookeepers tranquillise the animals if they need to be treated at the zoo hospital.
We saw a Tree Kangaroo in the operating room. The vet was taking some blood from the animal's tail and checking his eyes and ears. The animal was given special medicine to make him sleep so that he did not feel anything.
We also went into the kitchen where the zookeepers were preparing food for the animals. We saw lots of vegetables being washed and cut up.
We learnt about the different kinds of teeth herbivores, carnivores and omnivores have and we looked at the skulls of these animals and were able to feels the molars, incisors and canines. We saw a huge elephant tooth!
When we were walking about, we did see a peacock, butterflies, bees, a few Manta Rays in a pond and a monkey in the tree by the entrance of the zoo.
